Governor Gladys Wanga has publicly responded to Governor James Orengo following controversial remarks he made during a recent roadside rally, saying the incident highlighted the challenges women continue to face in leadership spaces traditionally dominated by men.
In an open letter, Wanga noted that she was addressing the matter in her personal capacity, reflecting on the emotional and social impact of the remarks rather than speaking as Homa Bay Governor or ODM Chairperson.
The governor explained that she initially chose to remain silent but later felt compelled to respond because the comments represented broader issues affecting women in public life.

She said the incident prompted her to reflect on the values and guidance she had expected from senior leaders she respected.
Wanga further argued that language perceived as demeaning toward women leaders extends beyond politics and mirrors the discrimination, intimidation, and exclusion many women experience in workplaces, homes, and public spaces.
Despite expressing disappointment over the remarks, she maintained that her response was not intended to pressure Orengo into issuing a public apology.
Instead, she said she hoped the incident would encourage reflection among leaders on the importance of dignity, kindness, and respect in public discourse.
The Homa Bay governor also stated that she had chosen forgiveness and remained open to dialogue and collaboration for the benefit of the region.
Wanga linked the tensions to political disagreements within the ODM party following the death of party leader Raila Odinga, reiterating her support for Oburu Oginga as the party leader.
The dispute sparked backlash in Siaya County, where several Members of the County Assembly criticised Orengo’s remarks as sexist.
Some MCAs threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor, while others demanded an apology and called for greater respect toward women leaders in politics.
