The family of the former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has revealed that the late was diagnosed with brain cancer, after which he underwent two surgeries during his treatment.
In a recent statement issued by the family’s spokesperson Eric Wafula Nyongesa, the ex-IEBC boss suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital before he passed.
Following his diagnosis of a brain tumor, he was taken to Germany where he underwent surgery to remove it.

The family spokesperson went on to disclose that in April 2024, it was discovered that the tumor had recurred and he went back to Germany for a second removal.
The late Chebukati was taken back to the hospital later in December 2024 after returning from Germany after doctors confirmed that the tumor had recurred.
After he was discharged, he was readmitted to the hospital on February 12.
He was taken to the Intensive Care Unit where he suffered a cardiac arrest a week later on February 20, 2025.
The family moreover dismissed rumors that were doing rounds on social media suggesting that he was ‘clinically dead.’
”At no time was the immediate family called upon and informed he was clinically dead,” Nyongesa pointed dispelling the reports.
Chebukati will be laid to rest on March 8, 2025, in Sabata village near Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
