US Embassy Issues Security Alert Amid Ongoing Unrest in Tanzania

The United States Embassy in Tanzania has issued a security alert to foreign nationals following several days of civil unrest across the country.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 5, the embassy acknowledged that while the situation had begun to stabilize in some areas, a significant security presence remains in place.

It advised travelers and residents to remain cautious and avoid large gatherings.

The embassy also cautioned that foreign nationals may experience increased scrutiny from local security agencies, including possible temporary detentions, as authorities work to maintain order.

The embassy moreover urged visitors and residents to comply with local laws regarding the circulation of sensitive material.

According to the embassy, internet connectivity had been disrupted in several areas, with access to certain social media platforms and online services remaining restricted.

Notably, on Wednesday, the Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam reassured Kenyans living in Tanzania that their welfare and safety remain a top priority for the Mission. 

In a statement on Wednesday, November 5, the High Commission noted that normalcy has returned to Tanzania following the lifting of the curfew and other restrictions imposed by the government after the violence witnessed during the recent general election.

The High Commission added that it is working closely with Tanzanian authorities to guarantee the safety and well-being of all Kenyan nationals living and working in the country.

It further encouraged members of the Kenyan community in Tanzania to remain calm and continue with their daily activities as normal while staying alert to any security advisories.
