The United Kingdom’s High Commission has condemned police officers’ use of excessive force against protesters during the demonstrations which took place on Tuesday, June 17, in Nairobi.
In a statement on Wednesday, the commission expressed deep concern about the violence during demonstrations demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagatt in the controversial death of Albert Ojwang.
They also emphasised that police officers must earn and retain the trust and confidence of the citizens they are sworn to serve and protect.
This comes after a video circulated online of a face mask vendor being brutally beaten and shot at a close range by a police officer on Moi Avenue.
The incident raised concerns among the public, with its citizens and legal groups demanding accountability.
Among them was the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, who condemned the incident and called for immediate action.
