UK Dismisses Allegations of Troop Presence During Nanyuki Ebola Protests

The British High Commission in Kenya has refuted claims that personnel from the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK) were involved in policing protests in Nanyuki.

In a statement, the commission emphasised that British security personnel were not deployed or engaged in any capacity during the unrest.

“No BATUK personnel were involved in the policing of protests in Nanyuki on 9 June 2026,” the statement read.

This comes after images and claims suggesting that individuals dressed in British military attire had been involved in corralling protesters.

In response to the matter, the British Commission has confirmed that any British military uniforms observed during the demonstrations had been misappropriated.

According to the agency, it has formally raised concerns with Kenyan authorities over the misuse of the uniforms.

“British military uniform was misappropriated and we have raised concerns with the Kenyan authorities,” the commission added.

According to reports, protests were staged in Nanyuki as demonstrators opposed the establishment of a quarantine centre at the Laikipia Air Base for United States nationals exposed to Ebola.

The protests turned violent as demonstrators clashed with police amid open fire, leading to reports of at least one person killed and intensifying tensions in the town.
