His lawyers claimed that he now ended it because his case had been transferred to a civilian court following a supreme court ruling on 31st January.

The ruling stated that charging civilians in military court was unconstitutional.

During the court proceedings on Friday 21st February 2025 which marked the first time for Besigye to appear in civilian court, the opposition leader appeared in court looking frail and in a wheelchair.

Upon seeing this, his lawyers pleaded that he be transferred to a hospital to help him recover but the court rejected the plea explaining that they do not have authority to grants such request.

According to his lawyers, Besigye was ‘kidnapped’ in Nairobi in November and returned to Uganda where he was charged with illegal weapons possession and treachery in a military court.

Later on, him and his co-accused faced new charges of treason.

Treason being a capital offense in Uganda, If the opposition leader is found guilty, he might be sentenced to death.
