Travel Paralysed on Garissa–Mwingi Highway After Armed Attack

Transport operations along the Garissa-Mwingi highway were temporarily disrupted on Tuesday after suspected attackers ambushed a passenger bus at the Ukasi area in Kitui County.

According to reports, the bus was travelling between Garissa and Mwingi when it came under attack near Ukasi.

The incident reportedly forced other vehicles also operating along the route to stop as fears spread.

As a result, tens of traveller buses have since stopped their trip mid-journey as a safety precaution.

Reports indicate the drivers and passengers remained adamant they will not proceed with travel until they are assured of their security amid escalating tensions between the two warring communities.

The incident comes at the back of the reports that two individuals were killed in the area by unknown individuals in revenge attacks.

Further reports indicate that tensions remained high along the busy highway, with no official response from authorities.

The attack comes days after seven residents were killed in Tseikuru in Mwingi, Kitui County, on Sunday, April 26, in what police describe as retaliatory attacks.

According to reports, the attackers stormed the village and opened fire, killing the victims on the spot before fleeing.
