The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has issued a warning following the arrest of four suspects found in possession of an estimated 2,000 kilograms of zebra meat during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Kiambu and Nairobi counties.
In a statement released on Thursday, February 26, KWS said the crackdown targeted suspected bushmeat activities in Gikambura, Kiambu County, with follow-up enforcement carried out at Dagoretti Market in Nairobi.
The multi-agency operation resulted in the recovery of large quantities of suspected bushmeat.

Among the items seized were six sacks of suspected de-boned zebra meat, a fully skinned zebra carcass, and 15 frozen meat packages weighing approximately 250 grams each.
Authorities estimated the total consignment at about 2,000 kilograms, in addition to 7.5 kilograms of packaged frozen meat.
The four suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
“The operation led to the recovery of six sacks of suspected de-boned zebra meat, one fully skinned zebra carcass, and 15 frozen meat packages (≈250g each). The total consignment is estimated at approximately 2,000kg, plus 7.5kg of packaged frozen meat. Four suspects were arrested, and investigations are ongoing,” the statement added.
KWS went on to remind the public that hunting and trading in wildlife without proper authorization is illegal under Kenyan law.
KWS further warned that consuming bushmeat sourced outside regulated veterinary systems presents serious public health risks.
The agency noted that improper slaughter, handling, storage, and preparation of such meat can expose both handlers and consumers to zoonotic diseases.
