Spain Beat Netherlands on Postmatch Penalties to Head into Nation’s League Semifinals

Spain secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League after a thrilling penalty shootout victory against the Netherlands on Sunday night.

The tie was finely balanced after a 2-2 draw in the first leg last week. The second leg also ended in a 3-3 draw, leaving the aggregate score at 5-5, which meant that a penalty shootout was required to determine which team would advance.

In the match, Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice for Spain, sandwiching a penalty goal from Memphis Depay, which put Spain ahead 2-1 as the game approached its final stages. However, Ian Maatsen equalized for the Netherlands with a powerful strike in the 79th minute.

Spain regained the lead in extra time with a stunning goal from Lamine Yamal in the 103rd minute, but the Netherlands responded by leveling the score again with a penalty from Xavi Simons, forcing the match into penalties.

During the shootout, the Netherlands missed two opportunities as Noa Lang and Donyell Malen failed to convert their penalties. Pedri then stepped up to score the decisive penalty, sending Spain into the final four of the tournament.

Both teams played exceptionally well throughout the two legs, with the Netherlands deserving credit for their performance against the reigning European champions. While the UEFA Nations League has received some criticism, the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 competition showcased the tournament’s excitement and competitiveness.

Spain might feel they should have won within the regular time or even during extra time, but their supporters were treated to the drama of a penalty shootout. Coach Luis de la Fuente may have concerns about his team’s defensive displays over the two matches, but he can be confident in their attacking talents, especially with the extraordinary Yamal poised to lead the team to future successes.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, can take plenty of positives from their performances across both legs, and the future looks promising for Ronald Koeman’s squad.
