Sifuna Details Phone Call With IG Kanja After Obwaka Arrest

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday, May 13, revealed details of a phone conversation he had with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest of the late Dr Job Obwaka.

Speaking during Dr Obwaka’s memorial service, Sifuna noted that he contacted the IG to seek clarification on the arrest following reports of a dispute involving Nairobi Hospital.

He further claimed that the Inspector General denied knowledge of the arrest and did not provide further details despite the doctor being in police custody at the time.

Sifuna also expressed concern over the safety of the medic while in police custody, telling mourners that he feared for his wellbeing following the incident.

The senator referenced remarks previously made by President William Ruto regarding how individuals who allegedly frustrate Kenyans would be dealt with under the “mambo ni matatu” approach.

According to Sifuna, he had urged police leadership to consider releasing the late doctor on bail, citing his advanced age and concern for his wellbeing while in custody.

The Nairobi Senator also argued that Dr Obwaka’s condition made him vulnerable and unlikely to cope with detention, appealing for leniency in handling the case.

He further affirmed that he and his Linda Mwananchi team would continue advocating for the rights of Kenyans and holding the government accountable.

Dr Job Obwaka passed away on May 1 after suffering a heart attack while being rushed to hospital.

A female suspect who had been arrested in connection with his death was later released on May 13 after an autopsy found no evidence of foul play.

Dr Obwaka had served in the management of Nairobi Hospital and had previously been arrested over allegations of falsifying hospital records.
