Senate to Hold a Special Sitting on Wednesday

The Senate is expected to hold a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, to consider urgent matters, including the impeachment proceedings against Kericho Governor Erick Mutai.

In a gazette notice dated Monday, August 18, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the sitting had been scheduled following a request by the Senate Majority Leader and a communication from the Kericho County Assembly.

“Pursuant to Section 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader with the support of the requisite number of Senators; and further upon receipt of a letter from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kericho, Ref: KCA/SP/3 Vol. 1 (39), dated 15th August, 2025 and received in the Office of the Speaker of the Senate on 18th August, 2025, by which the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kericho informed the Speaker of the Senate of the approval of a motion for the removal from office by impeachment of Hon. (Dr.) Erick Kipkoech Mutai, the Governor of Kericho County,” the notice read.

The Speaker noted that the Senate would reconvene on Wednesday, with the session scheduled to take place in the Senate Chamber from 2:30 PM.

Kingi also noted that Senators would first witness the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi before turning to the impeachment proceedings.

Governor Mutai was impeached after a dramatic session in the Kericho County Assembly on Friday, August 15.

The move marked a second attempt to remove him from office in less than a year.

The motion, tabled by MCA Kiprotich Rogony of Sigowet Ward, accused Mutai of reckless abuse of office and mismanagement of Ksh85 million, allegedly paid to contractors who failed to deliver any work.

Despite his strong denial of the allegations, all 33 MCAs present supported the motion, sealing his removal.
