Ruto Urges AU to Recognize Haiti as Africa’s Sixth Region

President William Ruto has called on the African Union to adopt Haiti as Africa’s sixth region.

In a statement issued on 16th February 2025 by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, Ruto proposed for the adoption of a Draft Declaration on AU solidarity with Haiti during the AU assembly.

According to the President, the adoption would help support the transition of Multinational Security Support (MSS) into a United Nations peacekeeping mission.

“President William Ruto proposes for the adoption of Draft Declaration on AU Solidarity with Haiti at the AU Assembly, to affirm its status as part of Africa’s sixth Region and ensure sustained support for the mission, including advocating for a transition of the MSS into a UN peacekeeping operation” Mohammed shared.

If Ruto’s quest is accepted, it would mean more international funding and additional troops.

In May 2016, the African Union informed the public that Haiti will not be admitted as a Member State of the African Union.

They cited Article 29.1 of the AU’s Constitutive Act that stated only African States can join the African Union.

However, AU developed strong cooperation with sister States in the Carribean region and citizens of African descent around the world.

Currently the sixth region recognized in AU is the African Diaspora which was recognized in the African Union Assembly in 2012.
