President William Ruto has departed for neighbouring Ethiopia to attend the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed confirmed that the President is in Addis Ababa for the AU Summit, convened amid global uncertainty and economic shifts, where leaders are expected to set continental priorities and advance Agenda 2063.
This marks President Ruto’s ninth official visit to Ethiopia since taking office, covering AU meetings, bilateral engagements, and working visits.

His previous trips included the United Nations Food Systems Summit, the Africa Climate Summit, and a one-day working visit in December 2025.
During the Assembly, Ruto will present Kenya’s reform, climate, and trade agenda. As AU Champion for Institutional Reform, he will report on progress toward strengthening the Union’s effectiveness, credibility, and financial sustainability.
He will also chair the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, presenting its report and reinforcing Africa’s common position on climate action, adaptation, resilience, and climate finance.
In addition, President Ruto will chair the inaugural African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Committee meeting, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to deeper regional integration and expanded intra-African trade.
On the sidelines of the summit, he is expected to hold bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening partnerships in trade, investment, health, and security.
The President will also seek support for Kenya’s national transformation agenda, including infrastructure development, agro-industrial expansion through irrigation, and energy security initiatives.
While it was not immediately confirmed whether Ruto would meet his ally, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Kenya has indicated plans to pursue a power purchase agreement with Ethiopia following the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
