Ruto Announces JKIA Upgrade Works to Begin in July 2026

President William Ruto has announced that the long-awaited modernization and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) will begin in July 2026 as part of the government’s broader plan to transform Kenya’s infrastructure and strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub.

Speaking during a meeting with grassroots leaders from Marsabit County at State House, Nairobi, the President said the government has secured the necessary funding for the project and is ready to commence construction.

Ruto noted that JKIA, which was built in the early 1970s, no longer reflects Kenya’s ambitions as a leading economic and transport hub in Africa.

He observed that the facility has undergone limited upgrades over the decades despite growing passenger traffic and increasing demand for modern airport services.

The announcement follows the government’s decision to award China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) a contract worth approximately Ksh375 billion for the expansion and modernization of the country’s main international airport.

Earlier this year, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) unveiled images of the proposed airport design, showcasing a significantly expanded facility aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency.

The plans include a new passenger terminal designed in a cross-shaped layout capable of serving multiple aircraft simultaneously.

The upgraded airport will feature more than 20 passenger boarding bridges, expanded parking facilities, modern pick-up and drop-off zones, and improved transport connections.

The master plan also incorporates the development of an Airport City and a Special Economic Zone intended to attract investment and stimulate economic activity around the airport.

To ease movement within the airport complex, the project includes provisions for rail trams and a bus rapid transit system that will connect passengers to various sections of the facility.

According to KAA, the modernization project is expected to enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in global aviation, boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and support long-term economic growth.

The JKIA expansion will be the first major project financed through the National Infrastructure Fund (NIF), a financing mechanism recently established by the government to support large-scale infrastructure developments.

Part of the funding is expected to come from proceeds generated through the privatization of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly increase the airport’s capacity and reinforce Kenya’s position as a key gateway for travel, trade, and investment in Africa.
