Chelsea have completed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £117 million, making the 23-year-old the most expensive British footballer in history and the costliest signing in the Blues’ history.
The versatile attacker has signed a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2033, becoming one of the first major additions under new head coach Xabi Alonso as Chelsea continue rebuilding ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Neither Chelsea nor Aston Villa disclosed the transfer fee, but British media reported that the package surpassed the previous British transfer record of £116 million, set earlier this month when Manchester City signed Elliot Anderson. The move also eclipses Chelsea’s previous record signing of Moises Caicedo, who joined from Brighton for £115 million in 2023.
Rogers arrives in west London after two outstanding seasons at Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s brightest attacking talents. Since joining Villa from Middlesbrough in 2024, he made 125 appearances, scored 31 goals, and played a pivotal role in helping the club lift the UEFA Europa League title last season, scoring in the final against Freiburg.
The forward also enhanced his growing reputation on the international stage during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, featuring in seven of England’s eight matches as the Three Lions finished third. His impressive performances further cemented his status as one of England’s most exciting young players.
Speaking after completing the move, Rogers expressed his excitement at joining Chelsea and revealed that the club’s long-term project convinced him to make the switch.
“I’m so excited. For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid. I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started,” Rogers said.
Chelsea beat competition from several clubs, including Premier League champions Arsenal, to secure Rogers’ signature. The transfer represents a major statement of intent from the Blues despite the club missing out on European football this season.
For Aston Villa, Rogers’ departure marks the end of a successful chapter for a player who developed into one of the club’s standout performers. Villa paid an initial £7 million for him from Middlesbrough in 2024, meaning the sale represents a significant profit while Middlesbrough are also set to benefit from a sell-on clause included in the original transfer agreement.
Chelsea supporters will now be eager to see how Rogers fits into Xabi Alonso’s plans as the club looks to return to the top end of English football.
