Reuben Kigame Escapes Death in Kapsabet–Chavakali Road Crash

Presidential candidate Reuben Kigame has criticised an Easy Coach passenger bus driver after a near-fatal incident along the Chavakali–Kapsabet Highway.

In a statement issued on Sunday, March 1, Kigame said his vehicle, a Prado, was forced off the road while attempting to avoid a speeding bus that was allegedly overtaking dangerously with its headlights on full beam.

The incident occurred at about 5:00 a.m. at Shiru along the Kapsabet–Chavakali stretch.

Kigame accused the bus driver of reckless driving that endangered his life and those of the other occupants in his vehicle, saying they had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision and ended up in a ditch.

Reuben Kigame faulted Easy Coach for what he described as a failure to enforce discipline and professionalism among its drivers.

He condemned the company over the incident, accusing it of putting lives at risk through reckless conduct on the road.

Kigame also criticised the relevant authorities tasked with road maintenance and safety oversight, arguing that the poor condition of the highway significantly heightens the risk of accidents.

Reuben Kigame was travelling to the University of Eldoret, where he had been scheduled to deliver a talk at the time of the incident.

He attributed the poor state of the road at Shiru where the accident occurred to the contractor, the county government, and the highways authority, saying they bear responsibility for its maintenance.

Kigame also expressed gratitude that no lives were lost and thanked Mr. Manasseh Kijo and a group of young men who assisted them out of the ditch, adding that he was able to proceed with his journey and honour his speaking engagement at the university.
