Questions Arise Over Gachagua’s Absence During Raila Odinga’s Farewell

The absence of DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua at the State Funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has sparked speculation among Kenyans, with many questioning his conspicuous no-show at the national event.

The ceremony drew prominent figures from across the political spectrum, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi, a rare show of unity in honour of the late opposition leader.

Gachagua’s absence surprised some observers, who had anticipated his attendance despite his strained relations with Raila during the 2022 General Election period.

However, with President Ruto’s arrival marking the final high-ranking entry at Nyayo Stadium in line with State protocol, it became apparent that Gachagua would not be part of the service.

Reasons for his lack of attendance were yet to be revealed at the time of publishing, as no formal communication was issued by his camp ahead of the Friday event.

However, following the news of Raila’s death, Gachagua sent a condolence message, praising the late leader for his service to humanity and his pivotal role in championing Kenya’s democracy and liberation.

The former Prime Minister passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, after suffering a cardiac arrest during a morning walk in Kerala, India.

He was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m. Indian time.
