Public Alert: KMPDC Cautions Against Fake Doctors

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has raised an alarm over increasing number of platforms where unqualified individuals pose as medical professionals providing false medical practices.

In a recent official statement issued by Dr. David G Kariuki, CEO of KMPDC, he emphasized on serious consequences caused by the fraudulent practices.

He stated that such practices are serious violation of law and a threat to Kenyan’s health.

These so-called ‘doctors’ are not only misleading the public but also putting lives at risk by offering unqualified medical advice. This is a serious violation of the law and a direct threat to the well-being of Kenyans.

It is an offence under section 22 (2) of CAP 253, Laws of Kenya, to use the title Dr (Medical/dental services) without the requisite qualifications or to purport to offer medical/dental services while using the title.

The CEO warned.

The CEO added that such offense carries the penalties of a fine not exceeding Ksh5,000,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both.

When stating the penalties, Dr. David also revealed that the same repercussions also go for Kenyans who use the title without acquiring qualification under section 22 (3) of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act CAP 253.

Such ‘fake individuals’ poses significant risks to patients leading to misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis or even exacerbating underlying health conditions.

KMPDC further instructed Kenyans on how to verify a doctor and a health facility.

To verify a doctor, send: P#Full Name of Practitioner or Registration number. To verify a health facility, send the following: H#Full Name of Facility or Registration Number.
