PSK Identifies Individual Who Recorded Gachagua Buying Medicine

The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) has provided an update regarding a viral video showing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua purchasing medicine at a pharmacy.

In a statement released on Friday, February 27, PSK said that preliminary checks confirmed the individual in the footage is not a registered member of the society and is not a licensed pharmacist.

PSK called on the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to intervene, ensuring the pharmacy involved complies with licensing requirements and adheres to statutory and professional standards to safeguard patient safety.

“Following preliminary verification, PSK confirms that the individual featured in the circulating footage is not a licensed Pharmacist and is not a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya. We call upon the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) to investigate the matter thoroughly, verify compliance of the outlet with licensing requirements, and reinforce patient safety standards across all pharmacy premises,” the statement read.

On February 26, PSK emphasized that capturing footage of patients without approval undermines healthcare ethics and privacy.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) emphasized that pharmacies are healthcare environments, not ordinary retail outlets, and that clients are entitled to respect and protection of their personal information.

The body highlighted the high level of training and professionalism expected of pharmacists, who undergo advanced studies in pharmacology, therapeutics, clinical decision-making, and patient safety, and commit to upholding patient welfare, confidentiality, and integrity in their practice.

PSK further stated that it is still investigating the circumstances of the incident, including whether any licensed pharmacists were involved at the outlet featured in the viral video.

The body emphasized that everyone, including public figures, is entitled to privacy and confidentiality in healthcare.
