Aston Villa nearly pulled off a stunning comeback against Paris St-Germain but ultimately exited the Champions League on a dramatic night at Villa Park.
Villa was looking to overturn a 3-1 deficit to reach the semi-finals, but their hopes seemed almost dashed when they fell two goals behind within the first half-hour. Achraf Hakimi capitalized on a mistake by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to put PSG ahead, and then Nuno Mendes doubled the French side’s lead, leaving Villa needing to score at least four goals.
In the electric atmosphere of Villa Park, Unai Emery’s team refused to back down and launched a remarkable response against the talented PSG side. Youri Tielemans pulled one back for Villa in the 34th minute with a deflected shot, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.
Villa struck twice in quick succession, reigniting hopes of a remarkable revival. John McGinn scored from 20 yards in the 55th minute, and just two minutes later, defender Ezri Konsa put Villa ahead on the night, thanks to excellent work from Marcus Rashford.
As Villa’s confidence grew, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made three crucial saves to deny them an equalizer in the tie. He leapt high to his left to magnificently deny Rashford’s rising shot, then turned away Tielemans’ header, before thwarting substitute Marco Asensio at his feet.
Ultimately, PSG managed to regain composure and held on to secure their place in the semi-finals, where they will meet either Arsenal or Real Madrid.
