Legendary Historian Prof. Bethwell Allan Ogot has passed away.
According to reports, the African History Scholar died on Thursday 30th January 2025 in the morning while receiving treatment at Aga Khan hospital in Kisumu.
Ogot from Gem, Siaya County is known for his specialization in African History, Research methods and theory and his contribution to the study of African History.
The deceased also taught in several universities and was a Chancellor in Moi University up to 2013.

After his retirement, the professor went to his rural home in Gem, Siaya County and continued with his research as he had done all his adult life until he met his death.
Former Prime Minister has mourned his death stating that his legacy will endure in the many works of history that he leaves behind.
Prof Bethwell Ogot was in the category of the now increasingly rare and outnumbered internationally known, deep, independent and professional scholars who treasured academic excellence and the value of knowledge to a community and a nation. In his death, Kenya and indeed the world, has lost a treasure who will deeply be missed.

James Orengo, the Governor of Siaya has also shared his tributes describing Ogot as one of the greatest scholars of his time who has left a legacy of seminal works and historical treatises.
A true thinker and intellectual par excellence. He now ‘belongs to the ages’. Rest in eternal peace.
