President Ruto Mourns 15 Killed in Fatal Nyeri–Nyahururu Highway Crash

President William Ruto has sent his condolences following a tragic road accident that claimed 15 lives along the Nyeri–Nyahururu highway.

In a statement issued on the evening of Saturday, March 28, the President expressed sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones in the incident. 

He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The accident occurred near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri County.

Ruto further noted that the national government is working closely with the Nyeri County government to support the affected families and provide necessary assistance during this difficult time.

“Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to the victims of the road accident that occurred this evening near Dedan Kimathi University in Nyeri County. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured.The national government, in conjunction with the county government of Nyeri, is engaging with the affected families and will provide all necessary support during this difficult time,” Ruto noted.

The fatal crash occurred near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and involved a 14-seater matatu and a truck transporting logs.

Reports indicate that the matatu was traveling from Nyeri town towards Mweiga, while the lorry was heading in the opposite direction.

Preliminary findings suggest the lorry driver attempted to swerve to avoid a motorcycle, leading to a head-on collision with the matatu.

Four people died at the scene, while 11 others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

Several survivors who were injured in the crash are currently receiving treatment in different hospitals across Nyeri County.
