President Ruto Launches Controversial Livestock Vaccinations Drive in Wajir

President William Ruto has inaugurated the livestock vaccination drive in Wajir County despite facing backlashes.

The Head of State accompanied by his Deputy Kithure Kindiki and few Cabinet Secretaries on Wednesday 5th February 2025 visited Wajir County for his day-long working tour of the county.

During his Wajir visit, the Head of the republic launched livestock vaccination drive.

The beneficiaries selected through the County disaster committee, MPs, Governor and the County Commissioner are the vulnerable families who lost their livestock through drought, elnino floods and banditry.

During the launch, few beneficiaries were granted 114 male breeds and 460 goats which were handed over to them by the President.

This will mean more income to farmers and a larger export market in Kenya.

The nationwide campaign for livestock vaccination was launched on 30th January 2025 in Kisargei, Segera Ward, Laikipia North Sub-County.

The campaign will aim to vaccinate 22 million cattle, 23 million sheep, 35 million goats and 4,3 million additional cattle.

This will be to eliminate foot and mouth disease (FMD).

However, the Kenya Veterinary association raised concerns towards the program urging the government to address public trust issues, resource gaps and stakeholders’ engagement to ensure its success.

The added that lack of awareness and misinformation among farmers and stakeholders had fueled resistance.
