President Ruto Fires Back at Matiang’i Over Education Remarks

President William Ruto has criticised former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i over his comments on the state of the education system, accusing him of faulting the government despite challenges inherited from the previous administration.

Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, February 2, Ruto said his administration took over an education sector that was struggling and has since moved to address long-standing problems.

The President cited inadequate school capitation, teacher shortages, and financial difficulties in several universities as key issues his government has been working to resolve.

He added that a number of universities and TVET institutions were at risk of insolvency when his administration assumed office.

Ruto maintained that his government is focused on fixing systemic weaknesses in the education sector rather than trading blame.

According to the Head of State, his government has added money into capitation for schools and ensured the money is disbursed on time.

He also noted that his government has hired 100,000 teachers and allocated more money to universities and TVETs.

The remarks come days after Matiang’i distanced himself from the challenges facing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), blaming poor leadership and mismanagement by the current administration.

In a statement on January 30, he argued that the curriculum was being unfairly blamed for deeper administrative failures, citing the handling of the 100 per cent transition policy as evidence of systemic weaknesses.

Matiang’i maintained that the crisis in the education sector stems from governance failures rather than the curriculum itself.
