Policeman Sentenced to 30 Years for Murdering Fellow Officer

Ali Ahmed Mohammed, a police officer serving in the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit in Trans Nzoia Sub-County, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of his colleague, Anthony Pkiror Areutum.

The case was successfully prosecuted by Counsel Sidi Kirenge.

The High Court, under Hon. Justice Reuben Nyakundi, heard that on 27 February 2024 at around 1:00 p.m., Mohammed, who had just finished his duty shift, entered VDM Liquor Store armed with a Taurus pistol issued to him earlier that morning.

According to court records, Areutum reportedly cautioned Mohammed about the unsafe handling of the firearm, urging him to secure it. Mohammed reacted angrily, pointing the gun at Areutum.

In the ensuing confrontation, the firearm discharged, killing Areutum and injuring Mohammed.

During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses and submitted several key pieces of evidence, including the arms movement register, ballistics report, and post-mortem report, all confirming the circumstances of the shooting.

In sentencing, Hon. Justice Nyakundi noted that the defence did not present any mitigating circumstances, such as provocation, intoxication, self-defence, or accidental discharge.

The judge condemned the misuse of the service-issued Taurus revolver, which was meant to safeguard the public but was instead used to take the life of a fellow officer.

The ruling underscores the judiciaryโ€™s commitment to enforcing accountability within the National Police Service and upholding the rule of law.
