Police Lob Tear Gas at Gachagua’s Allies in Murang’a

Rigathi Gachagua’s close allies were forced to flee for safety on July 27, after their convoy was teargassed in Murang’a County.

The DCP party  leaders were in the county to attend a church service in Kigumo Constituency.

After the service, the leaders were expected to address multiple public rallies in the county, but police mounted a blockade along one of the major highways to stop their movement.

In videos and images shared online showed Senator Methu, alongside other opposition figures attempting to negotiate their way through with a commanding officer, who was adamant the convoy had to turn back.

At one point, Methu can be heard asking the officer, ”What have we done? What is the problem with addressing the people?”

The situation later escalated, as a teargas canister was hurled at Methu as he was engaging the police officer, prompting the Senator and the other leaders to flee.

Several people were left nursing injuries, while vehicles from the convoy also endured damage, including from bullets.

This is the second weekend in a row that Methu has seen his envoy blocked by police officers.

On July 20, police set up a roadblock along the Nakuru-Nyahururu highway heading towards Subukia town after catching wind that Gachagua’s allies were planning to conduct rallies in Nakuru Town.
