Two suspects have been apprehended after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intercepted a vehicle transporting cannabis worth approximately Sh4.62 million.
According a statement by the DCI, officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) acted on intelligence indicating that a suspicious vehicle, registration number KDX 264K, was being used to ferry illegal drugs.
The detectives mounted an operation and waited along the highway before spotting the targeted vehicle.
However, the driver allegedly ignored orders to stop and instead sped off, prompting a chase towards the Subukia area.
According to the authority, the pursuit ended after officers tactically immobilised the vehicle.
“Officers signalled the driver to stop, but instead of complying, he floored the accelerator and attempted a daring escape, triggering a high-speed pursuit towards Subukia area,β part of the statement from the DCI read.
In addition, DCi said that the detectives managed to bring the chase to an end by deflating the vehicleβs front tyre.
Two suspects, identified as David Wafula and Loise Akoth, were arrested at the scene.
Moreover, a search conducted on the vehicle led to the recovery of seven sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing a total of 154 kilograms.
Investigators believe the narcotics had been carefully concealed for transportation.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are undergoing processing , awaiting arraignment in court.
Meanwhile, the recovered drugs have been retained as exhibits.
