Nottingham Forest dealt a significant blow to Manchester City’s Champions League aspirations, as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s late goal secured a 1-0 victory in a crucial match for both teams vying for the top four.
City, having a frustrating season, is now in a scramble for a Champions League spot—a situation rarely seen during Pep Guardiola’s tenure. This defeat marked their ninth in the league this season, putting them at risk of falling out of the top four for the first time in years.
In contrast, third-placed Forest extended their lead over City to four points, bolstering their chances of making an unlikely return to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 1981.
Before the match began, Forest honored their former defender Stuart Pearce, who was recently hospitalized, by displaying a “Get Well Soon, Stuart” message on the big screen in the third minute—a tribute to his iconic No. 3 shirt.
The game started cautiously, with both teams struggling to take control. City came close in the first half when Josko Gvardiol’s pass reached Phil Foden, whose shot was blocked by Nicolas Dominguez. Bernardo Silva later wasted a chance by opting for a wayward shot rather than setting up Erling Haaland.
Forest also had their opportunities, with Anthony Elanga delivering a dangerous cross to Dominguez, whose volley tested City goalkeeper Ederson. However, both teams lacked sharpness in a sluggish first half.
Guardiola made tactical changes in the second half, introducing Kevin De Bruyne, Omar Marmoush, Rico Lewis, and Mateo Kovacic to inject urgency into City’s attack. Nevertheless, Forest began to gain strength as the match unfolded.
Hudson-Odoi almost broke the deadlock with a curling shot that Ederson managed to push onto the post. De Bruyne then forced a save from Matz Sels with a well-taken free kick.
In the 83rd minute, the City Ground erupted as Morgan Gibbs-White unlocked City’s defense with a pinpoint pass to Hudson-Odoi. The young winger cut inside and fired a brilliant shot past Ederson at his near post.
This goal proved decisive, allowing Forest to secure a famous victory and leaving Guardiola’s side facing an anxious battle for Champions League qualification.
