Over 4.6 Tonnes of Contraband Sugar and Bhang Destroyed in Kisii

The National Police Service (NPS) has destroyed 3,600 kilograms of contraband sugar and 1,040 kilograms of bhang (cannabis) following the conclusion of criminal cases at the Kisii Law Courts.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 26, the NPS said the exhibits were destroyed through incineration at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital incinerator after the courts authorised their disposal.

According to the police, the destroyed exhibits had been preserved at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kisii and were linked to cases investigated by officers from the National Police Service before being concluded by the courts.

The destruction exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Kisii Law Courts and in accordance with court orders and the legal procedures governing the disposal of exhibits.

The NPS said the exercise underscores the commitment of the criminal justice system and law enforcement agencies to upholding the rule of law while ensuring that exhibits connected to concluded criminal cases are disposed of in a safe and lawful manner.

The police further noted that the destruction of the seized bhang and contraband sugar reflects the government’s continued efforts to combat drug trafficking, substance abuse and other forms of organised crime.

According to the NPS, the exercise also seeks to protect public safety and contribute to a healthier and more secure environment for residents of Kisii County and the country at large.

The destruction was witnessed by Kisii Law Courts Magistrate Mildred Obura, Court Registrar Winnie Keter, Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Marita Oimeke and Kisii County National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Director Simon Tonui.

Also present were members of the Court Users Committee, officers from the National Police Service led by Kisii County Police Commander Ronald Kirui and other stakeholders.
