Orengo Demands Answers After Security Detail Is Withdrawn

Siaya Governor James Orengo has protested the withdrawal of his security detail, demanding an explanation from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja over the move.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector General on Wednesday, May 20, Orengo said the withdrawal of his security personnel was carried out abruptly and without any formal communication.

He noted that the officers assigned to both his personal security and his Nairobi residence were removed without notice or replacement arrangements.

The Siaya Governor argued that security for State officers is a constitutional and statutory requirement meant to enable them to discharge their duties effectively and safely.

He further faulted the manner in which the officers were withdrawn, insisting the process lacked proper procedure and transparency.

Orengo has now demanded clarification from the police leadership on the circumstances surrounding the decision.

The county boss also called for the immediate reinstatement or replacement of security officers at all designated stations, including his Nairobi residence.

The development comes a day after members of the Siaya County Assembly threatened to table an impeachment motion against Orengo over remarks they termed insensitive towards Gladys Wanga.

Speaking on Tuesday, May 19, Majority Chief Whip Booker Bonyo announced plans to collect signatures to initiate the impeachment process, accusing Orengo of conduct unbecoming of a county leader.

Siaya County Assembly Majority Leader Martin Otieno also demanded an apology from the governor, stating that MCAs would boycott executive functions until Orengo expressed regret over the remarks.

Nominated MCA Cynthia Akinyi criticised the governor, saying leaders should mentor and support younger politicians, particularly women, instead of making statements perceived as demeaning.

Other female leaders also condemned Orengo’s remarks, insisting that women in leadership deserve equal respect and dignity in the political space.
