ODM Announces Oburu Oginga as Raila Odinga’s Successor

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as its new Party Leader, taking over from the late Raila Odinga.

The announcement was made on Thursday, November 13, with Suna East MP Junet Mohammed confirming that the decision was reached during the ODM National Governing Council (NGC) meeting in Mombasa.

He noted that the council had formally endorsed Senator Oburu for the position previously held by Raila.

ODM also revealed a series of additional leadership changes approved at the same meeting. The party named Abdulswamad Nassir, Simba Arati, and Godfrey Osotsi as Deputy Party Leaders.

Ariko Namoit and Otiende Amollo were appointed Vice Chairpersons, while Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu were confirmed as Deputy Organizing Secretary and Secretary of Political Affairs respectively.

Oburu was first appointed as the party’s Acting Leader on Thursday, October 16, following the official confirmation of Raila Odinga’s passing. The decision was reached during a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC), which convened to address the leadership vacuum created by Raila’s demise.

According to the party, the NEC unanimously agreed that Oburu was best positioned to take up the role in an acting capacity as ODM transitioned through the period of mourning and internal reorganization.

His appointment took effect immediately, allowing the party to maintain continuity and stability during a sensitive moment.

The elevation also reflected the committee’s confidence in Oburu’s long-standing involvement in the party and his deep understanding of its structures and agenda.

ODM emphasised that the temporary assignment was meant to ensure steady leadership as the party worked toward establishing a more permanent leadership framework in the months that followed.
