Nyayo Stadium Draws Huge Crowds for 62nd Jamhuri Day Commemorations

On Friday morning, December 12, large crowds of Kenyans streamed into Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium to celebrate the 62nd Jamhuri Day.

The 18,000-seat stadium was opened by 4:00 AM, and by 8:00 AM the stands were nearly full.

President Ruto is expected to lead the country during the Jamhuri Day celebrations, which will also feature military parades and performances.

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, who landed in Kenya on Thursday night, will serve as the chief guest at the ceremony.

Top government leaders among them Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Chief Justice Martha Koome are also expected to grace the celebrations at Nyayo Stadium.

Kenya officially transitioned into a republic on December 12, 1964, a historic milestone that saw Jomo Kenyatta take the oath of office as the country’s first President and usher in a new era of self-governance.

For its 62nd commemoration, this year’s Jamhuri Day places special emphasis on the nation’s tourism and wildlife heritage, alongside the expanding meetings, incentives, and exhibitions sector.

The theme underscores Kenya’s strategic focus on leveraging its natural assets and event-hosting capabilities to drive economic growth, enhance global visibility, and attract international investment.
