The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched a crackdown on pedestrians who fail to use designated footbridges.
This forms a part of efforts to improve road safety and enforce traffic laws.
In a statement, the authority announced that 22 pedestrians had been arraigned in court for allegedly obstructing the free flow of traffic by crossing the road instead of using the Allsops footbridge in Nairobi.
The pedestrians were charged following a joint enforcement operation involving NTSA, the National Police Service (NPS) and the Nairobi City County Government aimed at promoting safer road use and reducing pedestrian-related crashes.
A total of 22 pedestrians have been arraigned in court for wilfully obstructing the free flow of traffic at Allsop’s footbridge. The Authority, in collaboration with NPS and the Nairobi City County, will continue educating pedestrians on safe road use,” NTSA stated.
Additionally, NTSA stated that the enforcement exercise will continue alongside public awareness campaigns to encourage pedestrians to use footbridges and designated crossing points.
It further warned that road users who disregard the safety measures risk legal action, including fines and possible jail terms.
The authority noted that pedestrians accounted for 38 per cent of all road traffic fatalities recorded as of June 30, 2026, describing the trend as alarming and calling for collective action to reverse it.
