The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has cautioned parents against allowing underage children to drive their vehicles, warning that such action amounts to an offense under Kenyan law.
In a statement on Monday, November 2, 2026, the authority urged parents to keep car keys away from children below 18 years, even if they know how to drive.
According to NTSA, the minimum driving age in Kenya is 18 years, and allowing an underage child to access a motor vehicle constitutes an offense.
Additionally, those allowed to drive are licensed drivers with a valid driving license.
“Don’t let your child become the next statistic. The minimum driving age in Kenya is 18 years. Allowing, or failing to prevent, an underage or unlicensed person from driving is an offence,” NTSA stated.
The authority encouraged parents to have candid conversations with their children on the dangers of self-driving, in an effort to make them understand the seriousness of road accidents.
NTSA further called on motorists to keep track of their vehicles and ensure they know where their car is at all times to promote safety and accountability.
“Hold a road safety talk: Have a candid conversation with your children. Ensure they understand the consequences of underage driving and the devastating impact of road traffic crashes. Monitor vehicle use: Know exactly where your vehicles are at all times,” it added.
