The National Police Service (NPS) has clarified the viral video that circulated online, showcasing a police officer assaulting a man.
In the viral video, an individual dressed in a police uniform, believed to be a police was seen beating a man lying on the pavement ruthlessly.
According to the video, the police officers stepped on the victim’s neck while kicking him helplessly as road users watched from a distance.
The viral brutal video sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans, with most demanding immediate action against the officer.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the NPS clarified the viral video was from an incident that took place seven years ago, in 2018.
According to the police spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, the alleged police officer in the video was already identified and faced disciplinary action against him.
“National Police Service (NPS) has taken cognisance of a disturbing video circulating in the media, which shows a police officer assaulting a man lying on the ground”, part of the statement read.
“The service wishes to clarify that the incident occurred in 2018 and the officer captured in the clip was identified, with appropriate disciplinary action taken against him”, the statement added.
