NPS Confirms One Dead, 14 Arrested After Violence Rocks Linda Mwananchi Events

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that one person was killed and several others injured following violent clashes during Linda Mwananchi events held in Kisumu and Nyahururu on Sunday, July 12.

In a statement, NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga condemned the violence, describing it as an act of political intolerance that undermines public order, threatens national cohesion and infringes on citizens’ constitutional rights to peacefully assemble and participate in political activities.

According to the police, the violence in Kisumu broke out after rival groups clashed, leaving one person dead, several others injured, nine motorcycles torched and a police vehicle damaged.

Police officers responded to the incident and arrested eight suspects.

Investigations are ongoing, with authorities pursuing additional individuals believed to have taken part in the violence.

In Nyahururu, a separate group allegedly attempted to disrupt a Linda Mwananchi political rally by pelting stones at attendees.

The incident left several members of the public with minor injuries, including Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury.

He was treated and later discharged.

Nyaga also dismissed reports alleging that a shooting occurred during the Nyahururu chaos, maintaining that no shooting was reported during the incident.

He added that six suspects had been arrested in connection with the disturbance and remain in police custody pending their arraignment in court.
