Night Blaze Destroys Dorm at Mirithu Girls

A fire broke out on the night of Wednesday, April 29, at Mirithu Girls High School.

The blaze gutted one of the school’s dormitories, destroying personal belongings of students who had just resumed for the second term.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault within the dormitory.

Images and videos from the scene showed the building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke rising into the sky.

Firefighters from Kiambu County Fire Department responded to the incident and successfully contained the fire.

No casualties were reported.

According to reports, students were attending their evening prep lessons in class when the fire broke out, a factor that likely helped prevent injuries.

The incident comes months after a similar tragedy at Matungulu Boys Secondary School, which was closed indefinitely after a fire destroyed four dormitories.

The January 26 blaze, which occurred at around 10:00 p.m., left at least 15 students injured and more than 300 others without essential belongings, including beds, bedding, textbooks, and school uniforms.

Authorities later arrested four students after their names emerged during preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire.

A nearby resident reported hearing commotion before the incident and alerted a local administrator, who in turn contacted the police.
