The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, launched investigations into alleged police misconduct, an incident that occurred during the National Drama Festivals in Nakuru.
In a statement on April 10, 2025, Kanja directed the Internal Affairs Unit of the National Police Service (NPS) to investigate the matter and report back within twenty-one days.
The IG stated that the issue was under investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other independent bodies.
Despite that, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyanga, who signed the statement, defended the government’s decision to send security officers to the drama festival s stating that the police were deployed to provide security and ensure the success of the festivals.
“On Thursday, 10 April 2025, we received credible intelligence that some individuals were planning to disrupt the event and, as a responsible security organ, we put in place elaborate contingency plans to thwart such acts”, part of the statement read.
The statement comes after the police were reportedly accused of lobbing tear gas canisters to disperse a crowd during the event.
The crowds were protesting for the Butere Girls High School students.
The students who were part of the crowd were forced to run for safety.
