Protests have erupted in Nairobi following the fuel price hike in EPRA’S latest review.
In the latest review, EPRA announced that it had increased the fuel price to KSh. 46 per litre from its initial price.
According to reports, the protests began earlier this Monday also disrupting transport for those who had begun their day by 5:00 am.
The demonstrations follows a statement by the Transport Sector Alliance on Sunday, May 17, who declared a nationwide shutdown of operations in protest against the recent fuel price increase by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The development caused different matatu saccos and organisations operating in the city to announce the suspension of operations, causing panic to passengers.
Among the major organisations included are Super Metro, Latema Travellers, Metro Trans, and Forward Traveller, among others.
The Sacco’s further revealed that the strike is on until further notice.
During the demonstrations period, their services will be suspended.
“We demand the immediate reversal of the fuel price increase announced on May 14, 2026, standardisation of all petroleum products at the current kerosene price of Ksh 152.78 per litre and reduction of petrol and diesel prices to approximately Ksh 152 per litre, with the long-term target being Ksh 140–150 per litre,” the Transport Alliance stated.
Additionally, they called for the resignation of the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, and the disbandment of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority to pave the way for what they termed an independent energy regulation commission.
