Mutua Denies Accusations of Hijacking Raila Campaign

Constitutional lawyer and senior presidential adviser Makau Mutua, who also served as spokesperson and head of the think tank for Raila Odinga’s 2022 presidential campaign, has dismissed claims that he was responsible for Odinga’s loss in the election.

Mutua was responding to remarks made by Dennis Onyango, a former aide to the ODM leader, who alleged that he disrupted Raila’s campaign structure and contributed to its defeat.

In his response, Mutua rejected the accusations, saying his role in the campaign was limited and could not have influenced the outcome of the presidential race.

He also suggested that criticism directed at him stemmed from personal disagreements rather than factual assessment of his involvement.

He further maintained that the campaign team operated within an established political framework and dismissed claims that he had taken over or undermined its structure.

The dispute follows comments by Onyango during a recent interview in which he argued that internal mismanagement and poor coordination within Raila’s campaign team contributed to the loss.

He further claimed that the campaign lacked continuity and deep strategic planning.

Raila Odinga ultimately lost the 2022 presidential election to William Ruto, who won with 7,176,141 votes against Odinga’s 6,942,930 votes.
