MP Koech Issues Apology After Protest Shoot-to-Kill Talk

Belgut MP Nelson Koech has issued an apology months after advocating for a shoot-to-kill approach against protesters, expressing deep regret and embarrassment over his previous remarks.

The MP acknowledged that his comments, made impulsively during the height of the Gen Z protests in July 2025, were inappropriate and did not reflect his true character.

Koech said he now recognizes the gravity of his words and wishes he had exercised greater caution.

“I want to apologize; it is not my character and I am totally embarrassed by that statement. It came in the heat of the moment and I should have been more careful with how I made my statement,” MP Nelson Koech noted.

At the time, he had called for the use of deadly force against violent protesters, a stance that sparked widespread criticism.

Koech also defended police officers against criticism, emphasizing that they are legally empowered to use firearms when their lives are at risk.

He argued that attempting to breach highly protected areas, such as the State House, should not be treated as ordinary protests but as criminal acts warranting a strong response.
