Moroccan Surgeons Arrive in Kenya for Medical Mission

A team of specialist surgeons from Morocco has arrived in Kenya for a week-long medical mission focused on supporting children with hearing challenges.

In a statement issued on November 3, the Ministry of Health announced that the visiting experts will conduct cochlear implant surgeries at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) over the course of the week.

The Ministry moreover noted that the team will be working hand in hand with local specialists throughout the program.

Cochlear implant surgery is a highly specialized medical procedure that offers hope to individuals living with severe or profound hearing loss who gain little or no benefit from conventional hearing aids.

The procedure involves the implantation of a sophisticated electronic device that bypasses the damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve, enabling the brain to interpret sound signals.

This advanced technology helps recipients perceive sounds, recognize speech, and, in many cases, significantly improve their communication abilities and quality of life.

A cochlear implant system is made up of two main components.

The external part, worn behind the ear, captures sound and processes it into digital signals, while the internal part, surgically placed beneath the skin and into the inner ear (cochlea), receives those signals and sends them to the auditory nerve.

Together, the two components restore a sense of hearing to individuals who would otherwise live in silence.
