Millie Odhiambo Challenges Speaker Wetang’ula to Resign After the High Court Ruling

MP Millie Odhiambo has asked the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to step down and allow Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei to lead the House after a High Court ruling last week.

MP Odhiambo asked the Speaker to resign from the proceedings as the court ruling found that the speaker could harbour a conflict of interest.

“Mr Speaker, I humbly request you to step down and mandate Gladys Boss Shollei to take over in discharging the functions as speaker because of your conflict of interest. I want to urge as a parliament we need to obey court rulings and decisions even when we do not agree with them.”

However, in his rejoinder, speaker Wetang’ula said there is no special motion before the floor of the House seeking his removal.

The speaker moreover noted that the decision by the court did not demand his removal.

“I have read that judgment and there nowhere it requires me to resign,” he asserted.

He went on to assert that the ruling does not cast aspersions on the speaker.

“Neither the court nor anybody else can make decisions that affect this House. It is only you members who can decide,” he said.

Last week, the High Court ruled that Speaker Wetang’ula violated the Constitution by declaring Kenya Kwanza the majority in the National Assembly in 2022, citing lack of sufficient evidence.
