Mikel Arteta; Striker is the Hardest Position to Fill

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his intention to sign a striker this summer, acknowledging that acquiring a top forward is one of the most challenging tasks.

Following Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal exit against Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal is set to end its fifth consecutive season without a trophy, despite showing consistent progress under Arteta since he took the helm in December 2019. His only major achievement remains the FA Cup victory in 2020, and there is mounting pressure on the club to strengthen its attacking lineup this summer to enhance their chances of winning more trophies.

Arsenal’s targets reportedly include Red Bull Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyökeres, and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. When asked about his desire to secure a striker, Arteta referred back to the January transfer window when the club made a late attempt but failed to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.

“I want the best team, with the best players. If we can bring in three goal scorers who each score over 25 goals, we’ll definitely become a much better team,” he stated.

When pressed on whether finding a top striker is the toughest challenge, Arteta replied;

“Probably, because there aren’t many players who achieve those numbers. The statistics reflect this, and there are not many available in the Premier League. I will work to improve, but it’s also essential to develop and appreciate the players we currently have.”

Arteta also mentioned that Liverpool deserves a guard of honour when Arsenal visits Anfield on Sunday and acknowledged that his team has taken a step back in the league this season. After finishing second with 89 points and scoring 91 goals last season, Arsenal currently sits at 67 points with 64 goals scored ahead of their final three matches.
