Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered to support families who lost their loved ones during the recent floods in Nairobi.
According to the former Nairobi Governor, he will cover transportation and burial expenses for the deceased through his Sonko Rescue Team.
According to reports, at least 27 bodies are currently lying at various city mortuaries after their bodies were retrieved from various locations in the city.
According to the former County Boss, the initiative is aimed at easing the financial and emotional burden facing grieving families following the devastating floods that have affected several parts of Nairobi.
Therefore, the Sonko Rescue Team will be at the City Mortuary on Wednesday to assist in coordinating the transportation of the bodies and supporting the 27 families affected by the floods.
“I want to stand with the families of the deceased. Sadly, they had to lose their loved ones in such a manner. Through the Sonko Rescue Team, we shall provide coffins and transport the bodies and family members to whichever part of the country they wish to bury their loved ones in,” Sonko said.
He further slammed politicians for “politicising the flood crisis”.
“When I was governor, we made it a habit to unclog drainage to ease flooding. Instead of leaders coming together to help, some are busy politicising the issue. That is wrong. Let us come together and do what is supposed to be done,” he said.
According to the latest police reports, forty-nine people died during the recent floods while over two thousand families were displaced.
Additionally, sixteen police stations have been damaged by floods.
