Meta Restricts Tanzanian Activists’ Accounts Amid Post-Election Tensions

Two Tanzanian activists on Thursday, December 4, 2025, alleged that Meta has restricted or completely shut down their social media accounts, accusing the tech company of enabling the government’s crackdown on dissent after a violent election.

Los Angeles–based activist Mange Kimambi had her accounts deactivated, while fellow activist Maria Sarungi reported that her account had been restricted.

They claim the actions were taken following pressure from the Tanzanian government.

Taking to social media, CNN journalist Larry Madowo noted that he had contacted Meta regarding the bans, but the company had not yet issued a response.

Kimambi’s WhatsApp account was also deleted, effectively removing her from the messaging platform.

She later took to X, where she addressed the matter directly to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on December 3, 2025, defended the lethal crackdown on protesters, saying the force used was necessary to stop what she described as an attempted government overthrow.

Her comments followed a CNN investigation by Larry Madowo exposing police brutality and widespread killings during three days of post-election unrest.

The October 29 election saw Suluhu claim 98% of the vote, with major opposition candidates jailed or disqualified prompting allegations of rigging.

Rights groups and the opposition say more than a thousand people were shot dead, with many bodies reportedly buried in mass graves.

The UN has called for an investigation, while the EU is considering action against Tanzania.
