Maternal Deaths in Focus as Health CS Announces Preventive Measures

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has unveiled plans to tackle the rising cases of maternal deaths in Kenya.

The country is considered to have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in East Africa. Most of these deaths are linked to weaknesses in the healthcare system, including delayed emergency response, blood shortages, and other systemic challenges.

Acknowledging these issues, Duale announced the launch of the “No Woman Should Die While Giving Life” initiative, aimed at significantly reducing maternal fatalities.

He emphasized that the program would be strengthened through the deployment of skilled birth personnel and improved healthcare systems to ensure safer deliveries.

Duale added that the strategy would not end at the provision of qualified birth attendants and systems.

Financing will also be a key factor in the strategy.

The CS moreover stated that the programme will be tailored to each county to fit the specific needs arising there, with keen focus on at least 20 counties where cases of maternal deaths have been on a constant rise.

The CS further urged expectant women to do their part in helping curb maternal mortality.
