Manchester City maintain perfect start after Sunderland thriller

Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season after defeating Sunderland 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Antoine Semenyo scored twice for City, while Enzo Fernández and Rayan Cherki also found the net before Erling Haaland sealed the victory with a late goal.

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick, becoming the first Sunderland player to score three goals in a Premier League match since 2016.

However, his goals were not enough to prevent Sunderland from suffering defeat.

City twice saw Sunderland fight back to level the contest, but Semenyo’s second goal restored their advantage before Haaland’s late strike secured all three points.

The victory means City enter the international break with five wins from five Premier League matches and a three-point lead at the top of the table.

The result also extends new manager Enzo Maresca’s perfect league start as City continue their title campaign.
