A 34-year-old man has been handed a 40-year prison sentence by a Mombasa court for the defilement of an 8-year-old girl.
Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo delivered the ruling on Friday, June 26, after determining that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the accused’s defence was insufficient to discredit the evidence presented.
The offences occurred on multiple dates between July 1, 2023, and September 12, 2024, at the Café area in Likoni sub-county, Mombasa County.

Although the accused denied the charges, the prosecution called six witnesses to testify during the trial.
The young victim testified that the man would take her to his house and assault her repeatedly while her younger brother waited outside.
She also recounted being taken to a bushy area where she was attacked on several occasions.
The court heard that the perpetrator lured her with sweets and threatened to harm her if she ever revealed the abuse to anyone.
The case came to light after a neighbour alerted the girl’s mother.
The mother later testified, and the victim’s brother also provided information, telling the court that the accused would allow him to ride a bicycle before taking his sister into the house.
In his defence, the man denied all allegations but admitted to knowing the complainant as a neighbour and acknowledged that he occasionally let her brother use a bicycle.
Magistrate Odhiambo concluded that the offender exploited the child’s innocence and imposed the maximum sentence of 40 years imprisonment.
