The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has apprehended a suspect accused of impersonating a commission investigator and attempting to extort money from a member of the public.
In a statement by the EACC, the suspect, who posed as an EACC officer, targeted a director of a company contracted by the Narok County Government.
The commission stated that the suspect falsely claimed that the company was under investigation for corruption and threatened it with further action unless he was paid a bribe.
“The suspect contacted a director of a company contracted by the Narok County Government, claiming the firm was under investigation for corruption,” EACC stated.
He allegedly demanded Ksh2 million, promising to stop any further investigative action if the money was paid.
The suspect later arranged a meeting at a hotel where he was expected to receive part of the money, deepening the extortion scheme.
Following a complaint from the targeted company director, EACC launched surveillance and mounted an operation to track the suspect’s movements.
The sting operation culminated in his arrest on Monday, June 22, while allegedly receiving Ksh200,000, which was part of the demanded bribe.
“The suspect is being processed at the Integrity Centre pending the conclusion of investigations,” EACC added.
Investigators later established that the suspect is not an employee of the commission.
They confirmed that he had been impersonating an official to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
In response to the matter, the commission has cautioned members of the public against dealing with individuals claiming to be investigators outside official procedures.
It has noted that all summonses are issued in writing and require appearances at its offices.
